Message from the President

A society where every individual is respected

We are now living amid a major transformation in an information society, one that could be described as occurring only once every several hundred years. Media has diversified, and information originating from individuals can move the world.

At the same time, information of unknown veracity and fake news have spread over the internet and through social media, influencing people’s behavior in various ways.

The Mainichi Shimbun was founded in 1872, the fifth year of the Meiji era. In its history spanning over 150 years since its inaugural issue, the journalism that the Mainichi Shimbun has cherished is not just to convey events as news but to shed light on hidden problems through its reports and, together with readers, build a society where each and every individual is respected.

Our diverse reporters have confronted issues that tend to be overlooked, working with the conviction of wanting to create a fairer society.

“Looking at the individual, conveying information to the world and connecting society to become a communicator company.” This is the vision that The Mainichi Newspapers Co. has embraced for 2030. To appropriately provide solutions to the various social issues arising in this era of intense change, we will boldly take on new challenges without being constrained by conventional frameworks.

President and CEO
Nobuhiro Saito
