The Mainichi Newspapers Signs Contract as Tokyo 2020 Official Partner

January 22, 2016
The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd.

The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. concluded a contract with the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on January 21, 2016, to become an Official Partner in the category of “Newspapers.”

The Mainichi Newspapers, which is marking the 144th anniversary of its founding this year, is the oldest newspaper in Japan. The company has long been associated with the Olympic Games, being the first ever Japanese newspaper to dispatch correspondents to cover the 1908 London Olympic Games, and provide full-scale coverage of the Games. The Mainichi Newspapers also invited the general public to propose slogans for the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games with the support of the Japanese Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 1964 Organising Committee, and selected the motto “One world — the Tokyo Olympics”.

The Mainichi Newspapers has also contributed to the development of the sporting community in Japan through its organisation of several popular annual sporting events. These include the National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament, the National High School Rugby Tournament, the All-Japan High School Ekiden (marathon relay) Championship and the Intercity Baseball Tournament. It also has a long tradition of organising the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon – the oldest marathon in Japan and an International Association of Athletics Federations gold label event.

Based on our experience over many years, we are determined to spread the excitement of the Tokyo 2020 Games through a wide variety of efforts including coverage in our printed and digital media, as well as promoting a range of cultural and other projects. Through such efforts, we aim to contribute to the promotion of peace, friendship and equality through this wonderful festival of sport.

In particular, The Mainichi Newspapers will renew its determination to help areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake recover from the disaster, and proactively support the Paralympic Movement as the only newspaper company in Japan that publishes a Braille version of its newspaper.
